Is there a difference between dendritic agate, dendritic opal, and merlinite? According to The Book of Stones, dendritic agate is one stone and merlinite is something else. He doesn't list the opal. I believe Judy Hall makes a distinction b/w the agate and merlinite also. Thanks much! R.B.L.

I love this question because it made me go into some of my reference materials to find an accurate answer, so THANK YOU!!

Let's start with the term "Dendritic". Dendritic is a general term for the formation of what appear as fern like or mossy like inclusions. There are both natural occurances and "enhanced" ones.

Dendrites can be found in a number of crystals. Anything that has Dendrites will have "Dendritic" put in front of it~ Dendritic Opal, Dendritic Agate, etc.

I have seen three uses of the word "Merlinite".

The first is a marketing name for a white chalcedony containing dendrites, aka Dendritic Chalcedony. Mindat.org verifies this in their extensive database.

I have also seen Dendritic Opal called by the same name, Merlinite. My gut says that this is not OPAL but OPALIZED Chalcedony.

The second is Merlinite as described by Judy Hall which is Psilomelane inclusions in Quartz.

The third, "Mystic Merlinite" is just a made up name. According to the one who trademarked the name, "Mystic Merlinite is the name given to a unique mineral discovered in Madagascar. It has not been fully analized but appears to be constituted of Quartz, Feldspar and several trace minerals."

The Book of Stones is talking about this particular Mystic Merlinite, because all of the stones in that book are carried by or trademarked (the name) by the author. You will notice that the prices on this made up name are far more expensive than the real thing.

I hope this has been helpful!

with love and crystal blessings,

Mira
